Startup Programs
Startup programs are necessary to get your computer ready for use. It loads the data so you can write letters, view pictures and videos, and many other important tasks. Without this information, your computer would be useless. It needs to be ready so you can use it. Every time you download a new program, it is placed on your startup list so it is loaded when you turn on your computer. It takes more time to start all these programs as this list grows larger. When your computer was new, it started pretty fast. Now, it takes a bit longer before you can use it. This is one reason your startup time is longer than before. Start>Run. Enter the word "msconfig" (without the quote marks). Click "Ok".
Click the "Startup" tab at the top to see all the programs that are activated when you power up your computer. As this picture illustrates, there are a lot of programs that are started up when you turn on your computer. Are all these programs needed at the beginning of your computer use for this session? Absolutely NOT! In fact, most of these programs can be safely removed from this list. The only time you would need many of these programs are if you are doing highly specialized work with complex programs. Most home users don't use these types of programs. Many common programs like Adobe Reader, Java, Microsoft Office, and your basic email accounts don't need to be on this list. They will be accessed automatically when they are needed.
