Buying a Computer

What do you want when you are buying a computer?

Does it need to be fast? Is a large memory important? Does it look good?

Is the screen big enough? Does it run cool and quiet? Can you watch a couple of movies on battery power?

The good news is that many computers can do these things. Home users will be satisfied with most computers. Even the basic ones have decent power.

But, when buying a computer, you can increase your level of satisfaction by learning a few more things.

You could be ecstatic with your new computer and not just satisfied. It may only cost you a few more dollars.

Computer Features

Here is a list of qualities that can enhance the satisfaction of your computer. Just scroll down and view the ones that apply to you.

shiny computer
  • Appearance.
  • Some computers are really shiny or glossy. This surface holds fingerprints like a magnet.

This might stress you out if you are a clean freak!

  • Battery Life. (Of course, this only applies to laptops and netbooks.) Customer reviews are a great way to get answers.

The only way to get long battery life is to get a computer with a 8 or 12 cell battery, or a smaller screen with an efficient processor. (Check the computer specifications to get this information.)

  • CD/DVD Drive.
  • All laptops and desktops come with this feature. Most netbooks don't come with it! (Beware, if you want to watch movies on disc with your netbook!)

  • Keyboard Comfort.
  • Try the computer keyboard at the store if possible. Otherwise, make sure the store has at least a 7 day return policy.

  • Ports.
  • USB ports are the most important. Get at least 2, preferably more. VGA, S-Video, DVI, or HDMI ports are necessary to attach with an external monitor like a TV.

  • Screen size.
  • A 15" screen is the best size for comfortable viewing for most people. As you move to a smaller size, it will become more difficult to read.

You can adjust the size to suit your particular situation. For example, a student with great eyesight can use a netbook with a 10 inch screen. Or, a business person may use a 24 inch screen to view multiple pages at the same time.

  • Speakers.
  • Test them out before buying a computer. Make sure they are loud enough and transmit sound clearly.

  • Speed of the computer.
  • There are 3 components that affect the speed; processor, installed memory or RAM, and system size.

The processor should be dual-core or simply 2 cores. (The Intel Core i3, i5, an i7 are good too.) The memory should be 2GB's or more. The system size should be 64 bit. (That was easier than you thought, huh?)

  • Video (Graphic) Cards.
  • You need to get a better video card when gaming or doing video work. Most computers are just equipped to handle the basic tasks.
    Summary

Buying a computer is more than just getting one that looks good. It takes some extra time to choose the one that is best suited to meet your needs.

But, if you spent the extra time to get the components to match your needs, you will be ecstatic with your computer!

You are done buying a computer. You have done a great job in choosing the best one for yourself!
